
We visit Oakland, where teachers are on a hunger strike in protest against plans to close and merge several schools due to under-enrollment. This happens ahead of Tuesday’s crucial school board vote that will decide whether the plan should be implemented. Activists fear that the move could lead to the dislocation of hundreds of Black and Brown students from their neighborhood schools and diverting resources to charter schools. Moses Omolade, a Westlake Middle School community schools manager and one of the striking workers, said that many have been able to speak out against systemic racism. “The school board is attempting to close predominantly Black and Brown schools without engaging with us at all.”
