While many people in the nation are focusing on the destruction from Hurricane Harvey, others are fighting an entirely different battle. For people in the Pacific Northwest, raging wildfires are threatening their homes and lives.
A particularly massive wildfire in Oregon has already claimed thousands of acres due to scorching flames. Now, for the first time since it began, authorities have identified the cause of the fire.
Police say they have identified a 15-year-old boy suspected of setting off fireworks that may have sparked a massive wildfire raging outside Portland, according to NPR.
"It is believed he and others may have been using fireworks which started the forest fire along the Eagle Creek Trail," Oregon State Police said in a news release.
One hiker even witnessed the boy throwing a firework into the forest. The fact that someone would have so little regard for the safety of others, and the forest itself, is truly shocking.
"I saw this boy lob a smoke bomb down into the ravine," hiker Liz FitzGerald told Willamette Week. "I saw his friend or a guy that was there with him videotaping it with his phone. I looked over, and I said, 'Do you realize how dangerous that is?’”
