On Tuesday, reports emerged that the world's oldest man has passed away. He died just a month after his 113th birthday.

Francisco Nunez Olivera passed away on Monday in southwestern Spain. He spent most of his life in a village called Bienvenida.

According to reports, the local officials in the village declared Tuesday a day of mourning because of his death. Their mayor, Antonio Carmona, said it was a "shame for the entire village and the whole world."

He continued, "In recent years he has meant a lot to us, he has represented our village and he has helped make us known and loved."

Olivera was born on December 13, 1904. According to the Daily Mail, Olivera's relatives attribute his long life to his consistent habits. They said that his diet mostly consisted of vegetables grown on his own land and a daily glass of wine. They also said that he would have sponge cake made with olive oil and a glass of milk every day for breakfast. Additionally, until the age of 107, Olivera would go on daily walks by himself.

Reportedly, doctors attribute the long life expectancy in Spain to their Mediterranean diets. In fact, Spain has one of the longest life expectancies in the world.

One of Olivera's daughters, 82-year-old Maria Antonia, was his full-time caretaker. She said that at his 113th birthday celebration, he was in "good health."

The mayor said, "He's a living example of the quality of life in the municipality, but also of the pollution-free skies and countryside and stress-free work of the traditional way of life."

The mayor also said that they were working on entering Olivera into the Guinness Book of World Records. He said that it would have been good to get the village on the map, and many villagers already considered Olivera the "grandfather of the world."

Olivera had four children, nine grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He also had two siblings, aged 97 and 93.

With the loss of Olivera, the current oldest man in the world is now Masazou Nonaka, who was born on July 25, 1905.
