A world leader and his wife have just perished in a catastrophic helicopter crash in the U.S. state of New Mexico. According to multiple reports, Roy Bennett has died at the age of 60.

Bennett is a politician and opposition leader in Zimbabwe. At this time, there were no details released that indicated why he happened to be in the American southwest region. Five people, including Roy and his wife, died in the crash.

"State Police Lt. Elizabeth Armijo confirmed Bennett’s death Thursday, a day after a helicopter carrying him and five others went down in a mountainous rural area of northern New Mexico. Details of why the 60-year-old Bennett was in the area weren’t immediately available. The crash killed five and injured a sixth person aboard," reported the AP.

The crash reportedly occurred at around 6:00 PM on Wednesday near the Colorado state line. First responders learned of the incident after the lone survivor called 911 for help.

Bennett was known in Zimbabwe as "Pachedu", a name that meant "one of us" in Shona. He was highly regarded as the biggest obstacle for the current political leader in Zimbabwe and had gathered a large following of supporters. He was a major advocate for political change in the country.

"Obert Gutu, the spokesman for the MDC-T opposition party, said the loss of Bennett, a white man who spoke fluent Shona and drew the wrath of former President Robert Mugabe, was tragic."
