Many of the female actors and Hollywood figures attending this year’s Golden Globe Awards will be wearing black gowns in solidarity with sexual harassment victims in their industry and in protest of those who have perpetrated the abuse.
But it’s a move that some are saying is hypocritical because so many women have stayed silent for so many decades and have kept working in an industry that is being shown to have a long-running, deeply ingrained culture of sexual misconduct. One of those critics is “Charmed” actress Rose McGowan, who was one of the first people to come forward and expose producer Harvey Weinstein of serial misconduct.
“Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @GoldenGlobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy,” she wrote on Twitter, according to Deadline Hollywood.
Despite her words, the planned “blackout” is continuing, and it’s caused a panicked run on all-black gowns in the fashion industry, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
One publicist noted that, “Every request we've received thus far has been for black” and that "it's been quite a shuffle for fashion agencies."
Another representative added, "We are working hard to get in more all-black options to support those who are adhering to the Golden Globes consensus.”
Now actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and celebrity stylist Ilaria Urbinanti are confirming that some men will be wearing black, too. Johnson said he will be among them.
Urbinanti explained on Instagram, “Because everyone keeps asking me… YES, the men WILL be standing in solidarity with women on this wearing-all-black movement to protest against gender inequality at this year’s Golden Globes. At least ALL MY GUYS will be. Safe to say this may not be the right time to choose to be the odd man out here… just sayin…”
The pressure she put on the men to join the protest — and not stick out as a potential abuser — was echoed by celebrity stylist Michael Fisher, who explained that, “I think the majority of men are going go safe in a black suit with a white shirt so no one's going to look the odd man out.”
Black suit with a white shirt? Conservative commentator Matt Walsh pointed out the vagueness of that fashion statement.
The Golden Globes will take place on Jan. 7 and will be hosted by late-night comedian Seth Meyers. He previously hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2014.
What do you think of this? In other news, Chelsea Clinton has given Melania Trump a big thank you on Twitter after numerous people attacked her.
