President Trump delivered a powerful announcement today by addressing the media from the Rose Garden on the White House grounds. The purpose of the meeting was to inform the nation that President Trump is declaring a national emergency at the southern border.

The declaration allows for specific funding to be freed up and then allotted towards the building of the border wall. The news was met with extreme praise from supporters and conservatives around the nation.

The notes below highlight some of the key points of the President's speech earlier today. They are from the White House's Office of Public Liaison.

ON DECLARING A NATIONAL EMERGENCY

Today, President Trump announced that he would declare a National Emergency on the southern border.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “Today, I'm announcing several critical actions that my Administration is taking to confront a problem that we have right here at home. We fight wars that are 6,000 miles away. Wars that we should have never been in in many cases, but we don't control our own border. So, we are going to confront the national security crisis on our southern border.”

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “I’m going to be signing a national emergency. And it’s been signed many times before. It’s been signed by other presidents from 1977 or so. It gave the Presidents the power. There’s rarely been a problem.”

There is a crisis at our southern border that, for far too long, Congress has failed to address.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “[We’re declaring the emergency] because we have an invasion of drugs, invasion of gangs, invasion of people and it's unacceptable.”

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “We had a little disappointment for the first year and a half, people that should have stepped up did not step up. They didn't step up, and they should have. It would have been easy, not that easy, but it would have been a lot easier. But some people didn't step up. But we’re stepping up now. So we have a chance of getting close to $8 billion, whether it is $8 billion or $2 billion or $1.5 billion it’s going to build a lot of wall.”

Despite Speaker Pelosi’s objections, almost $1.4 billion is appropriated to build the wall and billions more will be used to help secure the border.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “I went through Congress, and I made a deal. I got almost $1.4 billion when I wasn't supposed to get one dollar, not one dollar. He’s not going to get one dollar. Well, I got $1.4 billion, but I’m not happy with it. I, also, got billions and billions of dollars for other things, port of entries, lots of different things, purchase of drug equipment, more than we were even requesting.”

A country without a border is no country at all.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “You don't have a border, you don't have a country. You know we fight, before I got here, we fight all over the world to create borders for countries, but we don't create a border for our own country.”

ON THE SECURITY SITUATION AT THE SOUTHERN BORDER

The situation on our southern border is dire – drugs, criminals, and gangs are pouring into our country and human trafficking is rampant.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “We are talking about an invasion of our country with drugs, with human traffickers, with all types of criminals and gangs.”

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “Last year, 70,000 Americans were killed at least –and I think the number is ridiculously low—by drugs including meth and heroin and cocaine and fentanyl.”

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “One of the things, I said I have to do and I want to do is border security. Because we have tremendous amounts of drugs flowing into our country, much of it coming from the southern border.”

Walls work.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “They say walls don't work. Walls work 100%.”

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “In El Paso, they have close to 2,000 murders right on the other side of the wall. And they had 23 murders. That’s a lot of murders, but it's not close to 2,000 murders right on the other side of the wall in Mexico. So, everyone knows that walls work.”

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “There are better examples than El Paso, frankly. You just take a look almost everywhere. Take a look at Israel. They are building another wall. Their wall is 99.9% effective, they told me. 99.9%. That’s what it would be with us, too.”

ON LEGAL SUITS

The President knows his actions will be challenged in court and is prepared to fight for American security.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “We will then be sued and they will sue us in the 9th Circuit, even though it shouldn't be there, and we will possibly get a bad ruling, and then we will get another bad ruling, and then we will end up in the supreme court, and hopefully we will get a fair shake, and we’ll win in the Supreme Court, just like the [travel ban].”
