On Wednesday President Trump and First Lady Melania arrived in Las Vegas to encourage some of the victims of Sunday night’s mass shooting, which left close to 60 persons dead and hundreds more wounded. Among the wounded was Thomas Gunderson, shot in the leg.
While President Trump made his rounds, Gunderson, who lay in a hospital bed with a heavily bandaged right leg, prepared to meet him. First, First Lady Melania stepped into the room, followed shortly by President Trump.
Gunderson, though in terrible pain, did what he felt he should do to honor the president and his country. He stood.
In his Facebook post, Gunderson wrote, “I will never lie down when the President of this great country comes to shake my hand!”
After Melania shook his hand, President Trump followed suit, patting him on the shoulder while asking about his health. Gunderson made it clear where he stands in respect to his country.
“There may be plenty of issues in this country but I will always respect my country, my president and my flag. Shot in the leg or not, I will stand to show my President the respect he deserves!”
So far, his post has been shared over 330,000 times on Facebook. It has garnered more than 13 million views in the eight hours since it was posted, according to The Blaze.
Gunderson wrote previously his thoughts on the Las Vegas shooting, posting them on Facebook.
“I would like to ask all of you to please pray for all the families affected by this tragedy. I feel so very blessed that not only am I alive but my gun shot went through and through. … I know that there is so much pain and grieving that comes along with a horrific incident like this but I would ask that we try and still somehow see the good in the world,” he wrote.
He added, “On Sunday night 1 evil man showed us just how cruel this world can be. In return, thousands upon thousands of people showed the world just how thoughtful, caring and kind this world can be.”
Just after the massacre, Gunderson expressed his thoughts, again via Facebook: “I want to say this right now while it’s fresh, People PLEASE listen to me! There are bad people in this world, but tonight, I saw every race and gender come together to save lives and protect each other.
“I had women tie my leg up to stop the bleeding. I had men carrying me on their back to safety and I had many black officers and civilians holding my hand and staying with me every second of the way. … take a step back, turn off the tv and go love the person next to you. Black, white, Mexican, straight, gay or anything else. Love on them and show that we are united as one in this country and NO ONE, no matter how hard they try, can’t break us! Ever!”
