It’s been exactly seven years since Kate and William announced their long-awaited engagement. The couple had been together for eight years—with a brief break-up—when it was revealed that the future King of England had asked Middleton to spend the rest of her life with him.
On November 16th, 2010, the couple gave their first joint interview. They talked about how their relationship began, how William proposed, and what the future looked like.
The interview aired on ITV on the day they announced their engagement to the public. In the video, Kate is wearing the now iconic royal blue Issa dress.
Watching the interview, it’s exciting to see how far the couple has come. They’ve each achieved so many of the goals they had for themselves as a couple and individuals.
When the interview took place, William had proposed a few weeks earlier. The proposal took place while they were vacationing with friends in Kenya with friends.
The couple said they had been discussing an impending engagement for a while, but Kate didn’t think he’d propose on the Africa trip. They were with friends, so her mind wasn’t on getting a ring.
“It was a total shock when it came,” Kate said. “There’s a true romantic in there.”
William added, “As every guy out there will know, it takes a certain amount of motivation to get yourself going. So I was planning it and then it just felt really right out in Africa. It was beautiful.”
Kate, of course, wears Princess Diana’s 18-carat sapphire ring. William said having Kate wear his late mother’s ring has sentimental value.
“Obviously, she’s not going be around to share in all the fun and excitement, so this is my way of keeping her close to it all,” he said of his late mother.
Will and Kate also took the time to reveal how they met while they were both students at the University of St. Andrews. William said that they were friends for a year before they started dating and things started “to blossom.”
At the time of the interview, Kate seemed to love William’s family. Hopefully, that continues to this day. She says she was really nervous to meet his father, Prince Charles, but it went smoothly. They also said the queen was gracious when Kate met her.
“It couldn’t have gone easier for me,” Kate said.
Likewise, Kate’s family, including her mom Carole, her dad Michael, her sister Pippa, and her brother James, embraced William as part of the family early on.
“Mike and Carole have been really sort of loving and caring and really fun,” William said. “They have been really welcoming towards me, so I’ve felt really a part of the family.”
Finally, they addressed their 2007 split, which rocked fans of the couple all over the world. William and Kate both agreed that the split gave them time to grow as people, and they came back to their relationship even stronger.
“At the time, I wasn’t very happy about it,” Kate admitted. “But actually, it made me a stronger person. You find things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realized. I really valued that time for me.”
At the end of the interview, Kate spoke about her desire to work hard to help improve the world. She’s succeeded in achieving that goal. Kate has worked as patron for organizations like Action on Addiction and the Art Room, in addition to her work to erasing the mental health stigma for children.
“I really hope I can make a difference, even in the smallest way,” said Kate.
The couple also spoke about their desire to have a loving family of their own. That wish has come true. The couple has two children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and Kate is expecting a third baby.
William also addressed the pressure for Kate to live up to Princess Diana. William adamantly said there should be no pressure for Kate to be the “next Diana.”
“No one is trying to fill my mother’s shoes,” William said. “It’s about carving your own future and your own destiny, and Kate will do a very good job at that.”
Congratulations to the couple on this momentous anniversary. May they have many more years of happy marriage. In other news, a reality TV star just announced her second pregnancy with adorable photos.
