Was George Soros a Nazi Officer in His Youth? Here’s the Real Story

There is plenty about billionaire financier George Soros that gives conservatives a bad taste in their mouth, from his liberal political views to his penchant for pumping vast amounts of money into the campaigns of liberal candidates and liberal causes. He’s certainly a mover and shaker with deep pockets and an anti-conservative agenda. And that’s why a claim about his deep, dark past has recently gone viral across social media.

An image is being shared of a young German man wearing a Nazi uniform with a caption above his head.

The caption reads: “...I give you George Soros. A SS in the National Socialist German workers party. Nazi party. He served under Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler. He said it was the best time of his life. The destruction and agony around him was euphoric to him. This man was making policy with Hillary Clinton. And some of you think Trump is dangerous. Wow!”

For those who believe Soros is deeply influential in America and is trying to shape it into a very different image, a past like that would certainly explain a few things. He’s been accused of being a Nazi collaborator, according to the Daily Wire. But a picture of him as a Nazi SS officer seems too gargantuan to have stayed hidden for this long.

And there’s a reason for that. It’s fake. As Snopes points out, Soros was born Aug. 12, 1930, so he would have been between the ages of nine and 14 during World War II. That’d make it a little hard for him to be an influential member of the Nazi Party. Plus, the alleged photo of him is not of a child.

As for the photo itself, it’s of 96-year-old Oskar Gröning, an Auschwitz squad leader who has since spoken out against Holocaust deniers and is currently serving a four-year prison sentence for helping facilitate the operations of the death camp during World War II, according to BBC News.

Soros grew up in Budapest as a Jew in a family that rejected their heritage, according to author Robert Slater. Slater says his family hid their roots in order to escape Nazi persecution.

While some people believe Soros to the most dangerous man on earth because of his power, influence, and left-wing ideology, creating a fake photo of him as a Nazi is a poor way to warn people about him, especially when it’s so easy to prove the fakery. If he’s someone to be deeply concerned about, then there should be plenty of facts about his life to point to rather than making ones up.
