Kellogg Company announced Friday that it has recalled a popular breakfast item voluntarily due to a potential presence of Salmonella.

The company is recalling its 15.3 oz. and 23 oz. packages of Kellogg’s Honey Smacks. No other Kellogg product is involved in this recall.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, Kellogg launched an investigation with the third-party manufacturer who produces Honey Smacks immediately after the FDA and Centers for Disease Control regarding reported illnesses.

The CDC states that the use or consumption of products contaminated with Salmonella may result in serious illness. It can also produce serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children.

Not only young children are at risk, but also frail or elderly people, as well as others with weakened immune systems. For persons with healthy immune systems the effects may not be as severe.

But those infected with Salmonella can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The illnesses usually last about four to seven days.

Most persons recover without treatment. But in rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.

Kellogg is asking people who may have purchased the tainted product to discard it and contact the company for a full refund. Consumers who would like to get more information, including images of the products, can visit Kellogg online at kelloggs.com/honeysmacksrecall, or call 1-800-962-1413.
