On Saturday, February 9, the world lost one of the greatest scientists in recent days. Walter Munk, one of the pioneers in oceanography, died at the age of 101.
Munk was a world-famous oceanographer, as he made several ground-breaking discoveries throughout his career. According to reports, his observations about waves, ocean temperatures, tidal energy, and the rotation of the earth became pivotal in the oceanography world.
Additionally, Munk was one of the founders of the University of California. He lived in San Diego, California. He passed away at his home in La Jolla on February 8.
Beyond his huge contributions to the study of oceans, Munk had a significant role in Wold War II as well.
