Volcano Erupted in Hawaii After Earthquakes, Thousands Evacuated From Homes

On Thursday night, a volcano erupted in Hawaii on the Big Island. The eruption took place at around 5 p.m. local time and caused mandatory evacuation orders to be placed.

According to CNN, the Kilauea Volcano is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Kilauea is located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and many areas of the park had already been shut off because of the “possibility of a new eruption and unstable geologic activity.”

The issue was caused this week when hundreds of earthquakes took place in the surrounding area. Since Monday, around 250 earthquakes, mostly with a 2.0 magnitude, have been recorded.

The earthquakes were following a collapse of a crater floor that occurred in a volcanic cone in the zone of the Kilauea Volcano. Now, after the collapse and the earthquakes, the volcano has erupted and released lava.

The Hawaiin Volcano Observatory said, “Shortly before 5 p.m., lava was confirmed at the surface in the eastern end of the subdivision.”

Now, over 1,700 people in the surrounding areas are under evacuation order. Many people in the Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens have been asked to flee to safety.

Gov. David Ige said, “I urge residents in the Leilani Estates and the surrounding areas to follow instructions…Please be alert and prepare now to keep your family safe.”

After the series of earthquakes, many people in the area were already on high alert. Residents in the area said that it felt like there was another earthquake every minute, with the most severe being a 5 magnitude.

Please be praying for all of the residents in the area during this time. We will continue to update as more information is revealed!
