The National Football League has been under major criticism this year. Players across the league have continued in the traction of kneeling for the anthem after it was started last year.
Many players have been vocal about their reasons for kneeling during the anthem. Some say that it is not about disrespect to the military or our flag, but it is about bringing attention to systemic oppression facing people of color in the United States.
At the Colts vs. 49ers game on Sunday, Vice President Mike Pence and his wife were in the crowd. As the anthem began to play, the Vice President and his wife rose to their feet and placed their hands over their hearts. However, not every player on the field did the same.
Some players chose to continue their protest and to take a knee as the Star Spangled Banner rang out. After their actions, the Vice President left the game in a protest of his own.
“I left today's Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem,” he tweeted.
President Trump also tweeted some facts about the event. He said he asked the Vice President to leave the game if any players decided to kneel during the anthem.
“I asked @VP Pence to leave stadium if any players kneeled, disrespecting our country. I am proud of him and @SecondLady Karen,” wrote President Trump.
Some players and leftists were quick to call Vice President Pence’s actions a publicity stunt. Some people think he only attended the game so he could make headlines by leaving.
