The Idaho Statesman writes that the Idaho Department of Agriculture officials claim that they have euthanized the snapping turtle that it seized from a junior high science teacher.
The teacher, who is accused of animal cruelty, reportedly fed a live puppy to the turtle.
The junior high biology teacher from eastern Idaho is under investigation by the school and law enforcement officials after a creepy incident involving a live puppy. According to sources, the live puppy was fed to a hungry snapping turtle after school as part of a science experiment.
Reports are claiming that an investigation is now underway to determine whether the teacher should be held legally accountable. The school district, too, is now conducting an investigation into the situation.
The biology teacher is Robert Crosland. He is being investigated following an unusual incident that was first reported in East Idaho News. Apparently, on March 7, he began an after-school animal feeding session which very quickly got out of hand. Many are claiming that the teacher engaged in animal cruelty.
The event reportedly occurred after students had been dismissed from school. In other words, the feeding wasn't an official school-sanctioned activity.
“A part of any investigation includes determining the best course of action once the facts of the matter have been ascertained. This is not a situation that is easy, nor do we feel it is a measure that can be taken lightly,” said Marc Gee, the Preston School District 201 Superintendent.
“While the district certainly does not condone individual actions that may violate district policy or reasonable expectations of behavior, we hope that any errors in judgment made by a teacher in this instance will not cause us to forget the years of care, effort, and passion the teacher has given to students in Preston School District,” Gee says.
"What I have learned in the last four days is disgusting. It is sick. It is sick," said an animal rights activist, according to USA Today.
"Allowing children to watch an innocent baby puppy scream because it is being fed to an animal. That is violence. That is not OK," they added.
The Idaho Statesman writes that many people have inundated the school district and law enforcement after reading about the report on the internet. According to Franklin County Prosecutor Vic A. Pearson, there has been a considerable amount of public reaction regarding recent headlines.
“There has been a considerable amount of public reaction regarding the allegations being made,” he said. “I understand the reaction of the public regarding this incident but would ask for some patience at this point in time. Such delays are not uncommon to ensure we have met the legal and ethical standards required by the criminal justice system.”
“The volume of calls being received by both law enforcement and my office is hindering our ability to complete what needs to be done to reach the end goal of justice in the case,” Pearson said.
