Following a public relations nightmare after a doctor was dragged bleeding off a flight, United Airlines made a big announcement Thursday regarding the lawsuit brought against them by the doctor’s high-powered personal injury lawyer.
According to CNN Money, Dr. David Dao’s lawyer Thomas Demetrio said United Airlines has agreed to settle with his client, who suffered a broken nose, lost teeth, and a concussion after he struggled with security officers.
Dao had refused to leave the flight after being asked to give his seat up for a last-minute crew member. Video footage of him being injured drew international outrage toward United.
Details of the settlement, including the amount of money, have not been released.
Demetrio praised United, saying, "Mr. Munoz said he was going to do the right thing, and he has. In addition, United has taken full responsibility for what happened...without attempting to blame others, including the City of Chicago."
Munoz first angered many customers after praising the actions of crew members, then a few days later, made any legal battle with Dao’s lawyer difficult to win by admitting fault and stating that Dao had done nothing wrong.
Now Munoz is pledging to reduce the types of situations that Dao found himself in and to up the amount of money passengers can be offered to take another flight. He said United employees can offer more than the $800 that Dao was offered, all the way up to $10,000.
The April 9 United incident likely contributed to tensions during a April 21 altercation between a mother with a stroller and an irate flight attendant on a American Airlines flight. Demetrio is also representing the mother in that case.
It could have also contributed to how a Delta handled a recent situation between their flight crew and a passenger who disobeyed a flight attendant’s orders because he couldn’t wait any longer to go to the bathroom.
