U.S Politician Under Fire for Racist Comments about Meghan Markle

Over the weekend, a GOP politician, who is challenging Speaker of the House Paul Ryan for his congressional seat, sent out a racist tweet about Meghan Markle. The tweet was so controversial that Twitter permanently suspended the politician, Paul Nehlen, over it.

In a statement to Newsweek about Nehlen's suspension, a Twitter official said: "While we normally do not comment on individual accounts, I can confirm that we have permanently suspended this account for repeated violations of our terms of service."

The February 9th tweet featured a photo of Meghan Markle next to fiancé Prince Harry. Over the face of Markle, who is biracial, Nehlen superimposed an image of "Cheddar Man," a prehistoric man who, according to The Guardian, lived some 10,000 years ago and is Britain's oldest complete skeleton.

Scientists recently concluded that the man, as well as other people from ancient Briton, would have had dark skin. Nehlen's captioned the photo: "Honey, does this tie make my face look pale?"

According to a screenshot, Nehlen, who is challenging Ryan in the primaries in Wisconsin, defended his original tweet with the following post on Sunday, February 11th.

Users on Twitter have reacted strongly to the tweet.

Markle's "Suits" co-star Patrick J. Adams, swiftly jumped to Markle's defense. He tweeted, "Oh @pnehlen— you're a sad and sick man with no sense of shame or class. Get a life."

He added, "And don’t go anywhere near MM—she's got more power, strength, honor and compassion in her fingernail than you'll ever know in this lifetime. Way above your weight class."

This isn't the first time that Markle has been the target of racist comments since she and Prince Harry announced their engagement on November 2017. In January the leader of Britain's UK Independence Party, Henry Bolton, ended his relationship with his girlfriend, Jo Marney, after a series of comments she made about Markle and people of color were made public. Later, Princess Michael of Kent wore a racist broach to brunch with Markle.

Neither the royal family or Markle have released a statement regarding the tweet. In other news, see the glamorous maternity gown that Princess Kate wowed with in Norway
