After Hurricane Harvey struck the Texas coast in August, devastation has fallen across the people of our country with the continuously rising death toll and increase in property damages in Houston. According to the Guardian, the death toll has risen to over 40 and is expected to get higher.
In the midst of trouble, our nation has come together in prayer and by giving to those affected by the aftermath. Since then, many names in Hollywood have stepped up to donate $1 million to Hurricane Harvey victims including, Sandra Bullock, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Ellen Degeneres.
A Christian actor, producer, and gospel songwriter has also joined in to donate $1 million to hurricane victims—Tyler Perry—but $250,000 of his donation will benefit Joel Osteen’s church. Perry made the exciting announcement via Facebook on August 31st.
In the video announcement, Perry touched on the controversy with Joel Osteen and Beyonce. Perry reportedly knows Osteen personally and came to the pastor’s defense about originally refusing to open his church doors.
Perry stated, “Joel and Victoria are amazing people; there’s no way that they would lock people out of a church and not let people in for a shelter. There were some safety concerns; I spoke to them on the phone and it all made perfect sense to me. Before you just run and judge somebody really quick, you need to know the whole circumstances.”
One of Perry’s major concerns was donating funds and not getting it directly to the people. In addition, he is donating $250,000 to Beyonce’s church; he is very confident that this pastor and Osteen will get the money directly to the people. He is currently searching for a place to donate the remaining $500,000 to, where he feels the people will be directly impacted.
