Amidst a box office top five films that included two highly anticipated sequels and a Disney animation, two movies that break the Hollywood mold have taken fourth and fifth this weekend.
According to ChristianHeadlines.com, "God's Not Dead 2" and "Miracles from Heaven," which has been playing for a few weeks already, are attracting large audiences with their blatantly Christian messages. Interestingly enough, both movies star actresses — Jennifer Garner and Melissa Joan Hart of "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" fame — who have not been shy about acting in these faith-based films despite criticism.
According to the Christian Post, Hart says she used to get criticism from some in the Christian community for playing a witch on TV, but said that now she's "getting grief for playing the good Christian woman who is being persecuted by the outside world."
Hart explained why she did the film, saying, "Today, there are a lot of Christians being persecuted for their faith far beyond the freedoms this country was founded on."
Of faith-based films, "Miracles from Heaven" producer Devon Franklin told Variety that "People underestimate not just about how much the core faith-based community, but also the public at large, wants movies that can inspire and uplift them."
