On Friday morning, Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina. The storm, which was recently downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, has entered with 90 mph winds and 3 inches of rain an hour.

Florence made landfall east of Wilmington near Wrightsville Beach. Though the storm has weakened in its wind strength, officials noted that the real danger in this storm will be the vast amount of rain and the flooding that it will cause.

On Friday morning, reports emerged that the town of New Bern was in extreme danger as more than 150 people were awaiting rescue when the storm surge reached 10 feet.

Resident Peggy Perry said, “In a matter of seconds, my house was flooded up to the waist, and now it is to the chest. We are stuck in the attic.”

Over the last week, President Trump has spoken out about the storm and has told residents from the Carolinas and Virginia that he would do what he could to look out for the well being of those who will inevitably be affected long after the storm leaves.

On Thursday, President Trump even made a surprise call to one particular North Carolina Mayor, Bill Saffo. Saffo is the mayor of Wilmington, the state’s fifth largest city with 121,000 residents.

According to Fox News, President Trump called Mayor Saffo in order to let him know that the federal government was on their side and that he was wanting to keep a line of communication open.

The mayor had said that when he saw the call coming in, he initially decided to screen it. However, when the number called again, he realized it may be important.

Mayor Saffo said, “I told him that we appreciate all the efforts at the federal level. I’m sure that we’re going to need some of their assistance when this thing is over.  But he was very gracious, very concerned about what was happening here in the area. And I just told him that I appreciated his telephone call and that we’ll be in touch.”
