President Trump unleashed a searing tweet directed at former FBI director James Comey after a newly released report from the Inspector General details how he and several others in the FBI tried to influence the 2016 Democratic election.
The report, released by Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz, was 18 months in the making. It scrutinized millions of communications between FBI agents to determine if there was any bias or attempt to prevent President Trump from getting elected. According to the report, there was.
Trump, now president, unleashed on Comey. He tweeted:
“The IG Report is a total disaster for Comey, his minions and sadly, the FBI. Comey will now officially go down as the worst leader, by far, in the history of the FBI. I did a great service to the people in firing him. Good Instincts. Christopher Wray will bring it proudly back!” Trump tweeted early Friday morning.
According to Fox News, Horowitz’s investigation found that Comey was “insubordinate” in his decisions to work independently from his superiors when he held a press conference to announce that the FBI was choosing to not press criminal charges against Clinton.
The report also discovered a strong slant against Trump as the election was well underway. Electronic communications between FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, at the time romantically involved, shared politically-charged anti-Trump texts between them.
“Trump’s not ever going to become president, right? Right!?” Page said in a text to Strzok in August 2016.
“No. No he won’t. We’ll stop it,” was Strzok’s response.
Trump went after Strzok in a separate tweet, also delivered Friday morning.
“FBI Agent Peter Strzok, who headed the Clinton & Russia investigations, texted his lover Lisa Page, in the IG Report, that ‘we’ll stop’ candidate Trump from becoming President. Doesn’t get any lower than that!” Trump tweeted.
