On Wednesday, January 2, President Trump is holding a shutdown meeting with top leaders in the Situation Room. According to reports, the meeting will focus on security at the Southern border.

According to The Hill, the cause for the critical meeting is the partial government shutdown that has been going for the past several days. In order to end the shutdown, President Trump asked several top congressional leaders to meet together to discuss the situation.

Attendees include Speaker Nancy Pelosi, incoming House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, House GOP leaders Kevin McCarthy and Steve Scalise, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell,  Senate Majority Whip John Thune, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin.

Fox News reported that the Situation Room is often reserved for matters regarding national security and defense. This time, it will be used to hash out an ongoing debate among Republicans and Democrats in leadership.

Press Secretary Sanders spoke out about the issue on Tuesday.

She said, "President Trump has made a serious, good faith offer to Democrats to open the government, address the crisis at our border, and protect all Americans. We have heard nothing from the Democrats, who so far have refused to compromise. Speaker Designate Nancy Pelosi released plan that will not re-open the government because it fails to secure the border and puts the needs of other countries above the needs of our own citizens."
