FBI Director James Comey just released what could be his own "October surprise" against Hillary Clinton, and just 11 days before the election.
According to Fox News, the FBI director who in July acknowledged that Hillary was "extremely careless" in mishandling classified information on her unsecured, unauthorized personal e-mail server but did not recommend her for prosecution has just announced that he is reopening the case.
In a letter written to members of Congress, Comey said, "In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of e-mails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation. I'm writing to inform you that the investigative team briefed me on this yesterday, and I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these e-mails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation."
Comey didn't detail what the "unrelated case" was, but the fact that he was willing to reopen this investigation after defending repeatedly defending his decision to not prosecute Hillary in front of an irate House committee shows that this new information is potentially more damaging than anything we've yet seen.
House Speaker Paul Ryan was quick to reply, releasing a statement on Twitter, writing, "Yet again, Hillary Clinton has nobody but herself to blame. She was entrusted with our nation's most important secrets, and she betrayed that trust by carelessly mishandling highly classified information. This decision, long overdue, is the result of her reckless use of private email server, and her refusal to be forthcoming with federal investigators. I renew my call for the Director of National Intelligence to suspend all classified briefings for Secretary Clinton until this matter is fully resolved."
Trump replied soon after while speaking at a rally in New Hampshire, according to CNBC, saying "I need to open with a very critical, breaking news announcement. The FBI has just sent a letter to Congress informing them that they have discovered new e-mails pertaining to the former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's investigation. And they are reopening the case into her criminal and illegal conduct that threatens the security of the United States of America."
The crowd went wild and began chanting "Lock her up! Lock her up!"
Trump continued, "Hillary Clinton's corruption is on a scale we have never seen before. We must not let her take her criminal scheme into the Oval Office. I have great respect for the fact that the FBI and the Department of Justice are now willing to have the courage to right the horrible mistake that they made. This was a grave miscarriage of justice that the American people fully understood. And it is everybody's hope that it is about to be corrected."
After pausing, Trump added, "So that is a big announcement that I heard ten minutes ago, and I guess obviously most of you folks have heard about. And in all fairness, and for all the people who have suffered for doing so much less, including just recently, 4-star General James Cartwright, General Petraeus, and many others, perhaps finally justice will be done."
"With that said," Trump concluded, "the rest of my speech is going to be so boring."
According to Matt Egan at CNN Money, the Dow dropped 15 points upon Comey's announcement as investors are unable to see this October surprise as no big deal.
