In recent days, a bombshell BuzzFeed report sparked a national controversy between Democrats and Republicans. The BuzzFeed article claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump previously instructed Michael Cohen to lie about a Trump Tower project that took place in Russia, according to Fox News.
Specific sources to support the claim were not provided to the readers. However, the article was deemed controversial because if it were true, Trump's actions were considered possible grounds for impeachment.
The office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is heading the investigation of Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election, released a rare statement in response to BuzzFeed’s claims. Several media outlets noted that Mueller rarely gets involved with the media’s stories, so the comment from Mueller’s team was truly “remarkable.”
“BuzzFeed’s description of specific statements to the Special Counsel’s Office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen’s Congressional testimony are not accurate,” a spokesperson replied on Friday, January 18th.
Shortly after the statement from Mueller’s team was released, BuzzFeed’s Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith replied in defense, “We stand by our reporting and the sources who informed it, and we urge the Special Counsel to make clear what he's disputing.”
It was only a matter of time before President Donald Trump weighed in with his two cents. In one tremendous tweet, Trump reminded America that this is not the first time BuzzFeed’s credibility has been questioned.
“Remember it was Buzzfeed that released the totally discredited ‘Dossier,’ paid for by Crooked Hillary Clinton and the Democrats (as opposition research), on which the entire Russian probe is based! A very sad day for journalism, but a great day for our Country!” Trump stated.
“Fake News is truly the ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!” he added later in a separate tweet.
