North Korea launched a new missile on Monday, and on Tuesday — the day America celebrates its independence — they claimed that they now have the ability to strike our mainland. According to the New York Times, North Korea declared their first successful intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test.
It could easily be another bogus claim by the totalitarian nation, but some experts who are studying the missile’s launch said that it flew longer than previous missiles and could mean North Korea has the ability to hit at least western Alaska. There’s still ongoing doubt, though, that North Korea has the ability to make a nuclear device small enough to fit on one of their ICBMs.
Still, U.S. officials are concerned enough to be gathering on the July 4th holiday to discuss what to do next if, indeed, the missile North Korea launched is an ICBM. According to CNN, a “measured response” is expected.
"The claim is being taken seriously," one unnamed source told CNN.
Late Monday night, President Trump delivered his own mocking response to North Korea via Twitter, writing, “North Korea has just launched another missile. Does this guy have anything better to do with his life? Hard to believe that South Korea and Japan will put up with this much longer. Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!”
