February 1st marks the start of Black History Month — an annual celebration of the African-American community’s achievements. Every year during this time, people recognize prominent African Americans in schools, politics, and other social environments.

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump commented on Black History Month on the first day of February via Twitter. Their comments come ahead of Super Bowl weekend, where they will be spending the next few days in Palm Beach, Florida.

“National African American History Month is an occasion to rediscover the enduring stories of African Americans and the gifts of freedom, purpose, and opportunity they have bestowed on future generations,” Trump stated.

The First Lady wrote, “February is #BlackHistoryMonth. Let us come together in celebration of our diversity to remember our past and look towards our future.”

However, Trump supporters came to the First Couple’s defense. Many appreciated their positive recognition of the African American community.
