The battle for 2020 is already beginning, as both President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden travel across Iowa to amass support. Trump won Iowa by 9 points in the election against Clinton, and he will appeal to what he has done to put more ethanol in gasoline on behalf of the farmers.

But Biden is out to win Iowa, an important state in the election since it is the first caucus state and has shown to go either way, voting for Obama in both elections but Trump in the last.

Even before the speeches in Iowa began, Trump shot down Biden's intelligence and mental health, saying, “I’d rather run against, I think, Biden than anybody. I think he’s the weakest mentally and I like running against people who are weak mentally.”

He went on to insinuate Biden's physical and cognitive decline: “When a man has to mention my name 76 times in his speech, that means he’s in trouble,” Trump said. “I have to tell you, he’s a different guy. He looks different than he used to, he acts different than he used to--he’s even slower than he used to be.”

Biden took his own shots at Trump, trying to weaken farmers' allegiance to the president. "I hope his presence here will be a clarifying event because Iowa farmers have been crushed by this tariff war with China," Biden said during his first event. "He thinks that being tough is great. It's really easy to be tough when someone else absorbs the pain."

At one of the Iowa rallies, a protester began heckling Biden. The former Vice President invited him on stage, trying to set a different tone from Trump rallies. "This is not a Trump rally," he said. "Let him go."

"Everywhere we turn, it's clear that Trump is shredding what we believe in most," Biden said during the second Iowa trip of his campaign. "I believe we have to restore those basic values."

But President Trump shared how unthreatening he finds Biden to be as a serious competitor. “Joe never got more than 1 percent except for when Obama took him off the trash heap,” Trump said, talking about the 2008 Democratic primary. “It looks like his friends from the left are going to overtake him pretty soon.”

He also defended his love and support of the farmers. “Nobody has treated farmers better than Trump,” he said. “The farmers are my best friend.”

“Joe Biden thought China was not a competitor. Biden is a dummy. Joe Biden thought China was not a competitor of ours,” Trump said, claiming that China “ate our country alive during Obama and Biden.”

“China is a major competitor and right now, China wants to make a deal very badly,” Trump said. “It’s me right now who is holding up the deal. We’re either doing a great deal with China or we’re not doing a deal at all.”

Well, it's already heating up for the next election. What happens in Iowa will serve as just a glimpse for Americans of what the 2020 campaign will hold in terms of competitiveness. Who do you want to win in 2020? Let us know in the comments! Thank you!
