Following their successful meeting, President Trump took a bold move, an unprecedented one, with Kim Jong Un.
President Trump formally invited the North Korean dictator to the White House. The purpose is to stage future peace talks surrounding Kim’s nuclear weapon’s program.
According to The Hill, Kim accepted Trump’s invitation. This is historic, since technically the two countries are still at war and have been since 1953.
Trump said that during his trip to Singapore that he had “absolutely” planned on inviting Kim to the White House, if the talks went well. Trump said that Kim will come to the White House “at the appropriate time, a little further down the road.”
“That will be a day that I very much look forward to at the appropriate time,” said President Trump.
At the summit, both President Trump and Kim Jong Un signed a two-page document that committed Kim to denuclearization; Trump agreed to provide security guarantees for North Korea, according to The Washington Times.
“We will solve it,” Trump said, referring to the conflicts and issues that have divided the nations. “We will be successful, and I look forward to working on it with you.”
The Hill reports that Kim’s visit to Washington could be the second of “many” meetings between Kim and Trump.
After the summit concluded, the president praised Kim as “a very worthy, very smart negotiator.”
