On Wednesday, President Trump granted clemency to a 63-year-old great grandmother who had been imprisoned since 1996 for a non-violent crime.

Alice Marie Johnson, a first-time nonviolent drug offender, was given clemency by Trump after a concerted effort by Kim Kardashian to influence the president to do so. Johnson had already served 21 years of a life sentence after she was convicted, according to CNN

The BBC reports that in 1996, Johnson, along with 15 others, were arrested after taking part in a cocaine distribution ring. She was convicted on charges of conspiracy to possess cocaine as well as attempted possession of cocaine.

CNN reports that she is expected to be released soon. Kardashian, when she learned of the clemency, tweeted, “BEST NEWS EVER!!!!”

This is the sixth act of clemency issued by Trump since he’s taken office, the second granted after an appeal by a celebrity. Last month, Sylvester Stallone helped persuade the president to pardon boxing great Jack Johnson posthumously.

Among the other Americans Trump has pardoned include Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, former Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza, and Kristian Saucier, the Navy sailor who pled guilty to taking illegal photographs of classified material aboard his nuclear submarine.

Ivanka Trump helped set up the meeting between Kardashian and her father. One of Jared Kushner’s focus has been prison reform as a senior advisor to the president.

"I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon. It is our hope that the President will grant clemency to Ms. Alice Marie Johnson who is serving a life sentence for a first-time, non-violent drug offense," Kardashian West said in a statement following her meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office.

"We are optimistic about Ms. Johnson's future and hopeful that she -- and so many like her -- will get a second chance at life,” the statement read.
