On Monday morning, President Trump announced his nomination for the Department of Health and Human Services secretary. The new HHS secretary will be replacing Tom Price.
Price announced his official resignation on September 29. According to Fox News, the former Republican congressman was under investigation for chartering private jets to visit health centers in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. Additionally, some said that he took a government-funded jet on family vacations, and also military aircraft for trips around the world.
Now, President Trump has announced his official nomination as Price's replacement. The president tweeted on Monday morning, announcing Alex Azar as the future secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services.
Reportedly, President Trump has been considering Azar as the HHS secretary for some time. He had previously served in the Bush administration as a general counsel and then as the deputy HHS secretary.
More recently, Azar worked as a senior executive at Eli Lilly. Additionally, he created Seraphim Strategies, a consulting firm focused on strategic health care.
A senior administration official told Fox News about Azar. They said that the new nominee was a twice unopposed, Senate-confirmed nominee for both of his roles within the Bush administration. The source said that with Azar's past experience, he will be able to "hit the ground running" as the new HHS secretary.
According to the Washington Post, Azar has been outspoken with his criticism of the Affordable Care Act. Over the summer, Azar said that the ACA could move in a conservative direction even without the full repeal of Republican congressmen.
He said, "I'm not one to say many good things about Obamacare, but one of the nice things in it is it does give tremendous amount of authority to the secretary of HHS."
