We rely on law enforcement officers to keep us safe, but they’re also trained to help during medical emergencies when paramedics can’t get there in time. That was the case with two highway patrol officers at a Chick-fil-A restaurant last Friday.
Troopers Dan DeLuca and Ben Miller of the Ohio State Patrol were sitting down for a quick dinner at the popular chicken sandwich restaurant in Boardman, Ohio when they saw an 11-year-old boy run to his mom while making grabbing motions at his neck and chest, according to local NBC affiliate WFMJ.
WKBN reports that both troopers instantly jumped into action and came to the boy’s aid.
“I’m looking at him right in the eyes, and I could see his demeanor change and his body language change,” DeLuca said after asking the boy if he was alright.
Miller was standing behind the boy and immediately performed the Heimlich Maneuver. It worked, and the boy began breathing again. It happened so quickly that most of the customers at the fast food restaurant didn’t even know what was going on.
“Thank goodness they were right there because they got right up and helped him out,” store manager Rachel Lipinsky said.
One woman shared a photo of the two officers, praising them on Facebook, and others were quick to weigh in.
“These (2/two) law enforcement professionals, as a career-long now 'retired' Elementary School teacher and Dad, are my SUPER HEROS of the day. Thank you for your service,” wrote Albert Brian Brown on the Ohio State High Patrol’s Facebook page.
“Absolute heroes!!! Thanks for all that you do!! Stay safe,” added Joyce Fisher.
Lana Cockrell wrote, “Such a great story! OSP IS THE BEST! Thank you for your service!”
