Tragically, another young woman can be added to the list of women who were attacked and murdered while exercising. In July, Iowa girl Mollie Tibbetts was murdered while on a jog in her hometown. Earlier this week, a female golfer was murdered on the course in broad daylight.
Now, a 35-year-old jogger in Washington, D.C. has been found dead. Police say they detained the man they say fatally attacked her on Tuesday night, stabbing her multiple times before leaving her for dead.
On Thursday morning, D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham identified 23-year-old Anthony Crawford as the suspected killer of the woman, Wendy Karina Martinez.
Crawford is charged with first-degree murder while armed. He has yet to enter a plea, and he does not have a lawyer at this time.
Martinez did not immediately die after the attack. She had the strength to get to a local Chinese restaurant. Sadly, she died shortly after she stumbled into the restaurant.
Police are still trying to determine a motive for the killing. Crawford has not been cooperative with their investigation.
“It’s unsettling for anyone who lives in this city to see this happen,” Newsham said.
Police believe this was an isolated incident. They think Martinez was likely attacked at random.
“This is one of those types of unsettling incidents that sometimes happens in large cities,” Newsham told reporters on Wednesday, “but it seems like a singular incident.”
Police found Crawford because he was captured by nearby surveillance camera. Police found footage of him fleeing the scene in a mustard-colored sweatshirt. The footage below shows Martinez shortly before she was attacked.
Martinez served as Chief of Staff of FiscalNote, a software, data, and media company headquartered in D.C. The company remembered her in a statement.
“The entire FiscalNote family is shocked and deeply saddened to learn that Wendy Martinez, our Chief of Staff, was killed last night,” her employer wrote on Twitter. “Wendy was an invaluable member of our team and a vibrant member of the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wendy’s family and friends.”
Her death is made all the more tragic by the fact that she had just gotten engaged the previous week. Her family fondly remembered her in a statement. They described her as a “devout Christian” and “avid runner.” They also shared how dedicated to her friends and driven to pursue her professional dreams she was.
“Everything you hope that a daughter and a friend would be,” her family said, adding, “Simply put, Wendy was fearfully and wonderfully made! Now we know she has found the one whom her soul loved. (Song of Solomon 3:4)."

"Wendy Karina Martinez was the light of our lives. Not only was she an avid runner, but she was a devout Christian, a wonderful friend, and a driven professional. Everything you hope that a daughter and a friend could be," her family said Wednesday. "She was also excited to be planning her upcoming wedding to her fiancé, Daniel Hincapie. They were engaged just last week."
"Simply put, Wendy was fearfully and wonderfully made! Now we know she has found the one whom her soul loved. (Song of Solomon 3:4)," the statement said.
Please pray for Martinez's family. This is a terrible tragedy; this woman was killed at the best time of her life. May God grant her family peace and justice.
