A terminally ill British boy in England was taken off life support five days ago after a lengthy and heated legal battle ensued over the life of the child.

According to People, Evans and James had been battling the courts to keep their son alive since Alfie was admitted to the hospital in December 2016.

Though an effort was made by Rome to bring the baby there to provide treatment, recent court rulings sided with doctors who said that there was no hope to revive the boy. The BBC reported that doctors argued against keeping Alfie on a ventilator, saying it would be “futile,” “unkind and inhumane.”

Furthermore, the European Court of Human Rights recently rejected the parents’ request to keep the doctors at the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool where Alfie had been staying from taking him off life assistance.

After the courts ruled against the family, the grieving father posted on Facebook his reaction to their decision. It highlighted the fighting nature of their son.

“I faught (sic) hard in court for my son because I know what’s right!! And look where we are now my son is still ALIVE AFTER OVER 10 horrendous scary heartbreaking hours.”

Sadly, his parents announced Saturday that Alfie, only 23 months old, has passed away.

“Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30 am,” wrote his mother Kate James, 20 in a Facebook post early Saturday morning. “We are heartbroken. Thank you everyone for all your support,” she said.

Father Thomas Evans, 21, also shared his thoughts on Facebook, “My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 02:30 … absolutely heartbroken … I LOVE YOU MY GUY…”

“We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Alfie’s family at this extremely distressing time,” said a statement from the children’s hospital. “All of us feel deeply for Alfie, Kate, Tom and his whole family and our thoughts are with them. This has been a devastating journey for them and we would ask that their privacy and the privacy of staff at Alder Hey is respected.”
