On March 6, the sad news broke that a young mother and her infant had been found after they were reported missing. Reports also said that the mother thought to have postpartum depression, and they were concerned about the possibility that she would try to commit suicide, according to ABC.
After looking for more than 24 hours, the police found the two in the mother's car. Rachel McAfee and her daughter Emma were found inside their car in freezing temperatures. EMS tried to save the baby, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
McAfee was transported to the hospital. She was suffering from what appeared to be cold-related injuries.
Rachel McAfee and her daughter Emma were reported missing on Monday by her husband. McAfee was supposed to drop Emma off at a sitter's house, but she never showed up.
Now sad details have been released about how they were found. McAfee was found lying across the center console of her car with a bottle of rum, according to local news reports.
In an interview, her husband, John McAfee, revealed his wife’s issues with drinking and depression. He said of the 36-year-old, “She’s just had some pre-existing issues from her past and just tries to drown then out sometimes. She’s got some depression and all that mixed in with it as well,” he said.
A neighbor saw Rachel McAfee and Emma parked outside of her house Tuesday morning. That was 24 hours after her husband said she left with their daughter. The neighbor told police that she asked McAfee if she was OK. McAfee, who was holding her daughter in the car, said she was fine.
When the neighbor returned home from work, she noticed that the vehicle was no longer running. She found McAfee slumped across that center console and no longer wearing a coat. It was 9 degrees outside.
First responders found the baby cold to the touch. Rachel McAfee was taken to a hospital and treated for frostbite.
Baby Emma’s autopsy results are pending, but doctors “found signs that are consistent with cold-related deaths.”
The McAfees also have an 8-year-old son. John said that he's trying to comfort their son, who misses his mother and sister.
“I’m trying to keep him busy. He just says he misses his mommy and misses his sister, so ... which is to be expected obviously,” he said in the Tuesday interview.
According to the most recent reports, police arrested the mother for neglect of a dependent causing death. She is expected in court on Friday.
Please join us in praying for this family, especially for the father who has lost his daughter in such a tragic way. May God guide and comfort the whole family.
