Bill Kristol, the editor of the Weekly Standard and a sharp critic of President Donald Trump, claimed on Monday morning that he supports Oprah Winfrey running for president in 2020.
The Hill reports that Kristol was a "Never Trump" Republican in 2020, and has had a long history not only of opposing President Trump but also candidates who seek to undermine the brand of conservatism that Kristol represents. Kristol has been called a neo-conservative and was an important architect of the George Bush foreign policy and served as a foreign policy advisor for Senator John McCain's presidential campaign.
In 2016, Bill Kristol recruited challengers to Donald Trump, although none of his candidates were able to win the support of the American public, especially as the Republican Party took a turn further to the right. Kristol has often criticized Trump as a threat to the nation and the GOP, especially on issues of foreign policy, and didn't necessarily think that Trump was much better than Clinton in the previous election.
Kristol's statement came in the form of a tweet after Winfrey's well-received speech on Sunday night at the Golden Globes, which indicated to many Americans that she might be preparing for a run for the White House.
Kristol tweeted the hashtag "I'mWithHer," something originally used by supporters of Hillary Clinton, in order to highlight that he supports Winfrey's possible run for president and that he, generally speaking, doesn't disagree with her worldview.
"Though if she runs, couldn't she win the Democratic nomination and the general election?" he added. "And wouldn't she be a better president than Trump?"
Kristol, a neo-conservative, is particularly impressed that Oprah was a supporter for regime change in Iraq when Saddam Hussein was in power. He is also impressed by her friendship with Allan Bloom, a conservative philosopher who was a staunch critic of the higher education system in the United States. Kristol finds it admirable that Oprah is able to foster a relationship with this conservative thinker.
Do you agree with Bill Kristol? Do you think that Oprah would make a good candidate for the Democratic Party? Let us know what you think. In recent news, potential 2020 Democratic challengers are making headlines.
