A truly sad, and strange, news story is making headlines out of Georgia. According to reports, a young boy is being treated after he was attacked by a rabid raccoon while sitting on his own front porch.

Chandler Mahaffey is only 4 years old. As he was sitting outside, the animal viciously attacked him. His parents were close by and quickly sprang into action.

“They got into a tussle on the floor and he was trying to fight the raccoon off of him, and as he tried to fight him off, the raccoon kept holding on to him and biting him repeatedly,” Amber Mahaffey, the boy’s mother, told Fox 5 Atlanta. “So we kicked the raccoon off of him. It ran around the house trying to attack everyone.”

However, the raccoon picked the wrong family to mess with. Chandler's mom quickly armed herself and then shot and killed the animal.

"Mahaffey said she then shot and killed the animal, and rushed her son to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Health officials recommend bringing children who have been bitten by a suspected rabid animal to the emergency department immediately so that treatment can begin before symptoms set in," reported Fox News.

Chandler was treated at a local hospital and is expected to be just fine. However, the crazy story brings a lot of awareness to the problem that rabid animals can cause humans. The CDC estimates that roughly 7,000 cases of rabies is reported annually.

As for Chandler's mom, she says she doesn't feel comfortable living in the woods and knowing there could potentially be more rabid animals lurking in the distance. However, she thinks she may have a plan.

“It makes you nervous a little bit but I’ve lived in the woods all my life,” Joseph Scroughams, a neighbor, told Fox 5 Atlanta. “I’ve been wanting to get with the neighbors take some shotguns to walk through the woods, three or four of us together.”

It seems we can all agree that the moral of the story here is to never mess with a mother from Georgia! Please join us in praying for Chandler's full recovery.
