Over the years, the Republican Party has developed a reputation as a male-dominated organization that is not sensitive to the interests of women. But that stigma may be lessening as the 2018 election nears.
The Hill reports that House Republicans have doubled the number of female candidates whom they have recruited to run for congressional seats in 2018.
So far this year, there are 103 Republican women running for House seats. That number is an increase from 48 in the last election. The hope is that the party will keep their majority and at the same time shore up a gender gap that the Democratic Party has accused the Republicans of maintaining.
“The number of female candidates on the Republican side doubling is not an accident,” said Matt Mackowiak, a GOP strategist. “That is a result of a disciplined effort to recruit strong female candidates, both from the party directly, but also from outside groups that believe female candidates give them a better chance to hold, and perhaps expand, their majority.”
One of the young female stars of the Republican Party is Representative Elise Stefanik, 33, from New York. She is the youngest female member ever elected to Congress.
But the Republicans, even despite their efforts to bridge the gender gap within its party members, still lags far behind the Democrats, who have also seen a record-breaking surge of 305 Democratic women running for House seats in 2018.
If six Republican women are not replaced – who are either retiring from office or moving on to a higher office – then the amount of Republican women in Congress could be reduced by 25 percent. To do so is a concern felt vital to the health of the Party as a whole.
“Republicans cannot perform poorly with women and continue to be a majority party in the country,” said Mackowiak.
