British Prime Minister Theresa May just resigned after nearly three years in office. The leader of the Conservative Party made the announcement outside 10 Downing Street, which is the office and home of the British Prime Minister.

Nearly in tears, May announced, “I will shortly leave the job that it has been the honour of my life to hold."

May addressed the issue which has plagued her time in office: Brexit. She said she had done “everything I can” to deliver Brexit but could not gain the necessary support. Because of that, she said it was in the “best interests of the country for a new prime minister to lead that effort."

She continued, “So I am today announcing that I will resign as leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party on Friday 7th June so that a successor can be chosen."

“The second female prime minister, but certainly not the last," added May. "I do so with no ill will, but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the country I love.”

May will formally resign as the Tory Leader on June 7. She will leave as Prime Minister after he successor is chosen, which will likely happen in mid to late July.

She leaves her successor to deal with Brexit, which has been a difficult situation. Her word of advice to that man or woman was “Compromise is not a dirty word.”

Her exit will not stop Brexit from happening. Just hours after she resigned, Boris Johnson said at an economic conference in Switzerland: "We will leave the EU on October 31, deal or no deal... The way to get a good deal is to prepare for a no deal. To get things done you need to be prepared to walk away."

May was visibly in tears by the end of her speech. Campaigning for her position is expected to begin the second week of June.
