When most people think of taking a shower, they think of cleaning themselves and beginning each day fresh. A shower also makes us feel our best and feel rejuvenated.
However, according to a new article from Time, most people actually don’t realize the disgusting and scary facts about their own bathrooms towels. After reading this, it may change the way you dry yourself off after your next shower.
According to Time, But towels offer the perfect environment for bacteria and other microorganisms to grow because they’re often damp, warm and absorbent, and they hang in dark bathrooms.
“Our bodies are adapted to being able to live in this environment with all of these microbes around,” says Emily Martin, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
When most people think of their towels, they assume they are clean because they are simply being used to dry off your clean body after a shower. However, that is apparently not the case at all! Your hands transfer tons of germs and microbes to your towel based on other things you touch in the bathroom!
According to Charles Gerba, a microbiologist at the University of Arizona, nearly 90% of bathroom towels were contaminated with coliform bacteria and about 14% carried E. coli. His published research has also found these bacteria on kitchen hand towels, and the numbers of E. coli correlated to how frequently towels were washed.
The best way to protect yourself is to clean both your hands and your towels regularly. They also recommend washing them at least once a week and letting them dry completely between uses.
