Buckingham Palace, the home of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, is one of the most iconic buildings in the world. It is more than just a home and a palace. It is a symbol for all of Great Britain
The sprawling palace is approximately 830,000 square feet and has 775 rooms, 1,514 doors and 760 windows through the sprawling building. The gorgeous garden on the palace grounds is the largest private garden in London.
Even though it may look as beautiful as the priceless works of art that are housed within, beneath the gorgeous facades and interiors, the palace is ailing. The electrical, heating, and plumbing systems date back to the 1950’s and according to Vogue, they haven’t been updated since.
The palace withstood a devastating fire in 1992 that had burned many of the state rooms. Until all of the old cabling is replaced, the palace is at a greater risk for future fires.
Due to the state of the palace, a rumor had circulated that Prince Charles didn’t want to live in the Palace when the time came for him to ascend the throne, a rumor that has since been denied by those closest to him.
With such massive issues plaguing the core of the building, it begs the question, what is next for the palace?
In 2016 a 10-year, $482 million plan was hatched to restore and upgrade the working symbol of the British monarchy and uphold its glory for at least the next half century. The massive plan for renovations include installing solar panels on the roof to make the palace more energy efficient. Also included in the plan is an overhaul of the plumbing, wiring and electrical systems. This also includes replacing the radiators and boilers.
The renovations are being paid for from the sovereign grant, an annual payment given to the Queen to fund her royal duties.
Millions of fans around the world are thankful that such great expense and care is being given to preserving this treasure for many future generations.
