President Trump made an unexpected announcement on Wednesday morning through a series of tweets. The president revealed that he will no longer allow transgender individuals to serve in the U.S. military.
These tweets came just a few weeks after Defense Secretary James Mattis said that there would be more time for this important decision to be made. He said that he would give military chiefs six months in order to conduct a review to determine the status of transgender people in the military.
The reason for these reviews was to see if transgender individuals would affect the “readiness or lethality” of the military. The deadline for it was supposed to be on December 1, 2017.
The decision was made five months earlier, with the news being announced on President Trump’s Twitter account on Wednesday.
This announcement came just over a year after former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter lifted the ban on transgender military service. It is not yet known how President Trump’s ban will affect the transgender troops who are currently serving in the military.
