It’s hard to say goodbye. Reality stars are a special kind of celebrity. Fans grow to know and love them as real people, not as characters — which makes the loss hit even harder.
In recent years, stars have come from The Deadliest Catch: The Real World, Survivor and The Real Housewives of Buckwild AndThe BacheloretteThey have died suddenly and tragically.
Sometimes the show’s production is severely disrupted. MTV put an halt to production in April 2013. Buckwild‘s second season, a reality series that followed nine young adults in West Virginia, after the death of star Shain Gandee. Cast and crew received grief counseling on-set immediately.
After an off-roading accident, the reality star and his uncle and friend were both found dead. Gandee was 21. According to the West Virginia Sheriff’s Department, the group died of carbon monoxide poisoning when the vehicle got stuck in the mud.
West Virginia Mayor Danny Jones urged the network to cancel the series following the death, claiming “the show only enhanced the negative stereotype the Kanawha Valley already has.”
The show was cancelled one week after the death. The first part of season 2 was never air. ProducerJ.P. WilliamsAlthough I tried to sell the show to other networks, MTV denied it.
“MTV is the most hypocritical network out there,” Williams told The Hollywood Reporterat the time. “Van [Toffler] Susanne [Daniels]You can continue to promote pre-martial sexual sex and encourage leaving the baby after having it [on Teen Mom]. I’m so glad they have found their moral bar.”
