Former Senator Thad Cochran has passed away, reported CNN. Cochran represented Mississippi in the US Senate from 1978 to 2018.

Cochran passed away on Thursday morning. His successor, Cindy Hyde-Smith, released the sad news in a statement.

The release said Cochran's family "extends its gratitude for the support shown to the Senator by Mississippians over the years," and that he "passed away peacefully early Thursday morning."

The long-serving Republican died in Oxford, Mississippi. A cause of death was not immediately disclosed. He resigned from his position as senator in April 2018 due to health issues.

Cochran was serving in his seventh term in the US Senate. He was first elected to Congress in 1972 before being elected to the Senate in 1978.

Please pray for his family as they mourn his passing. May God give them comfort and peace.
