It seems like Prince Harry didn't ask Meghan Markle's father for permission to marry Meghan—or if he did, he must have done it over the phone. According to People magazine, this is the first time Meghan's future husband and her father will meet.
Markle's father, Thomas Markle, will walk her down the aisle of St. George’s Chapel to marry Prince Harry on May 19. Kensington Palace announced the news on Friday.
“Both of the bride’s parents will have important roles in the wedding. On the morning of the wedding, Ms. Ragland will travel with Ms. Markle by car to Windsor Castle. Mr. Markle will walk his daughter down the aisle of St George’s Chapel. Ms. Markle is delighted to have her parents by her side on this important and happy occasion,” the palace announced.
According to reports, both of Meghan's parents will arrive in the U.K. in the week leading up to the wedding. This will allow Harry's family the opportunity to meet Meghan's parents. Given the fact that Meghan's parents are both "commoners" and they are divorced, it will be interesting to see how the families interact.
“Prince Harry and Ms. Markle are very much looking forward to welcoming Ms. Markle’s parents to Windsor for the wedding,” the palace announced.
Meghan's father used to be a lighting director on TV shows such as Married With Children and General Hospital. He and Meghan's mother were married for nine years until 1988. He lives in Mexico now.
Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, is a yoga instructor and therapist. She lives in Los Angeles. It's possible that Prince Harry asked Doria for permission. They have met several times, and she joined the couple for the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games in Toronto in September.
During their engagement interview, Meghan revealed that Prince Harry had yet to meet her father.
She said, “Everybody was really happy. And he’s talked to my dad a few times, hasn’t been able to meet him just yet, but it’s all been, it’s all been worth every effort,” she said.
While her parents are divorced, they seem to get along. When Meghan’s engagement was announced, her parents released a joint statement. At the time, they said they were “incredibly happy” about the news.
“Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents.”
Here's the one wedding tradition that Meghan and Harry definitely won't be breaking. Do you agree with them?
