One of the biggest names in the coffee industry is Starbucks. The famous brand has stores around the globe and serves millions of cups of coffee every day.
Starbucks was also recently in the news after a situation in Philadelphia that occurred last month. Two black men were reported to have asked to use the restroom inside the store when an employee told them that the restroom was reserved for paying customers only.
"The men asked to use the bathroom, but an employee told them it was only for paying customers. When they then sat in the store without ordering anything, the manager called the police, and the men were arrested for trespassing. No charges were filed," wrote CNN.
The incident was captured on camera and quickly went viral across social media. Many people thought the men were unjustly treated because of their race. Starbucks has since apologized for the incident and implemented racial bias training for employees.
Now, the coffee giant is making a big change that could go horribly wrong.
"We don't want to become a public bathroom, but we're going to make the right decision 100% of the time and give people the key because we don't want anyone at Starbucks to feel as if we are not giving access to you to the bathroom because you are less than. We want you to be more than," Chairman Howard Schultz said during a talk at the Atlantic Council in Washington.
Apparently, Starbucks had previously had a loose policy about using the restroom, however, it was ultimately a call left up to the manager. Now, the open-bathroom-door policy could be taken advantage of by anyone.
