The controversy centering around “Empire” star Jussie Smollett, 36, has gained a lot of attention in recent days. Several weeks ago, Smollett claimed that Trump supporters brutally attacked him so badly that he required hospitalization.
What was initially a sympathy fest for the television star suddenly took a 180 turn when news broke that he orchestrated the entire event. The police reportedly obtained evidence confirming that Smollett paid two friends, the Osundairo brothers, to beat him.
Although an official motive has not been identified, authorities believe Smollett was unhappy with his salary on “Empire.” According to Forbes, the cast member made a whopping $125,000 per episode.
Following Smollett facing 16 felony accounts, the Osundairo brothers are speaking out. Their attorney, Gloria Schmidt, released a shocking statement regarding their role in the hoax.
“This entire thing started because they put their trust in the wrong person...You have someone here who is a celebrity type, someone who is in a position of trust, someone who works with these people, someone who is able to help their careers if he so wants to, and then he betrays them,” Schmidt began.
“The impact that this has had — not only on them but on minority populations — weighs very heavily on them,” she added.
“What they are really focused on right now and what I can tell you about their reaction is that they feel tremendously regretful for their role and their involvement in this situation,” Schmidt continued. “Their main focus is to pick up the pieces of what this has done to their lives and to try to make this something positive — make something positive for them and have a positive impact on the community.”
