It is with sad hearts that a young entertainer was murdered outside a Toronto nightclub Saturday night. News of the death hit media outlets Monday. Two men were shot and killed, one of them a young 21-year-old rapper Jahvante Smart, otherwise known as Smart Dawg.
Smart had collaborated with the popular rapper Drake, who posted on Instagram Stories that his death is “devastating,” that “so much talent and so many stories we never get to see play out.”
“All these gifts and blessed souls and inner lights being extinguished lately is devastating,” Drake wrote. “I wish peace would wash over our city. So much talent and so many stories we never get to see play out. Rest up Smoke.”
Nathan Miller, a director who made a film about Canada’s rap scene that featured Smoke Dawg, posted on Twitter following the rapper’s death: “RIP Smoke Dawg, Toronto legend,” he tweeted, showing a video of Smart coming out of nothing to make his mother happy.
According to Fox News, the shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Queen and Peter streets in downtown Toronto. The other victim in the shooting was 28-year-old Ernest Modekwe. A woman bystander was also wounded in the shooting but is expected to recover from her injuries.
Smart’s death comes at the heels of XXXTentacion’s murder two weeks ago, as well as Jimmy Wopo’s slaying. Smart leaves behind his one-year-old daughter, his 13 siblings, and his parents.
