Jessi Zazu of the band Those Darlins passed away on September 13th. Zazu, whose legal name was Jessi Zazu Wariner, was only 28 at the time of her death.
The singer passed away after a protracted battle with cervical cancer. Zazu died surrounded by family, friends, and fellow musicians, reported the Tennessean. Those who couldn't fit inside her room lined the waiting room of Centennial Hospital's intensive care unit where she passed away.
Zazu and her band were at the forefront of the Nashville's indie rock revival a decade ago, and they showed that the city is more than just country. Along with Nikki Kvarnes and Kelley Anderson, Zazu emerged as a teenager onto the musical scene.
"Local music fans were captivated and the band began touring ferociously, multiplying its following across the nation. Those Darlins helped establish that the local music scene was more than just country," said The Tennessean.
After she was diagnosed with cancer at 26, Zazu took her battle public, talking about it in a cover story in the Nashvile Scene. At the same time, her band broke up and she decided to focus on her art. She even designed a t-shirt with the words "Ain't Afraid" that she used to raise $50,000 to pay her medical bills.
"Jessi helped her loved ones through her music and art and story. But she also helped strangers," said her friend Shelley DuBois. "Cancer patients she'll never know will be comforted by the art she made for the radiation room at Vanderbilt. She was so much bigger than herself. She'll continue to help so many people."
Zazu is survived by her parents and two younger brothers. Pray for her family as they deal with the loss of someone so young. In other news, Larry King just revealed his secret battle with cancer.
