Mitt Romney scorched the earth last week in his attempt to derail Donald Trump’s presidential run. Romney was hoping that his speech would dissuade voters from casting their ballot for Trump and instead turn towards an establishment.
Romney’s speech backfired in a big way. According to Breitbart, after Romney called Trump a “phony” and a “fraud”, support for Trump skyrocketed. A new poll shows that 31 percent of Republican voters say they are now more likely to vote for Trump.
In another blow to Romney, 30 percent of Romney supporters from his 2012 election are willing to support Trump. An additional 43 percent of those polled said that Romney’s criticism of Trump had no impact on them or their choice of candidate.
Romney’s speech did have some negative impact for Trump though. Approximately 20 percent of Republican voters, according to the poll, are less likely to vote for Trump. However, if one does the math, Trump still comes out ahead by double digits after Romney’s attack.
