Google has been working on their self-driving cars for about 8 years now. The journey started in 2009 and became Waymo in 2016.
Waymo stands for a new WAY forward in MObility. "We're working towards fully self-driving cars that make it safe and easy for everyone to get around."
Learn more about Waymo on their website here.
Today, Waymo started offering rides to people in Phoenix, Arizona, and other surrounding areas. They have 500 new minivans being used in the trial.
Most, if not all, of the trips should be self-driven. However, a human driver will be present in each ride to ensure the passengers' safety throughout these trial rides.
People who are interested in participating in the trial are able to sign up online at Waymo's website.
Those who are chosen to be driven will receive free rides.
Google feels confident in their extensive testing over the years, to not have much concern about the safety of passengers.
