President Donald Trump made an appearance at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland on Thursday, December 21st. During his visit, he visited wounded service members and awarded a Purple Heart to one special American Hero.
The Purple Heart, given to honor those wounded/killed in service, was awarded to 25-year-old 1st Lt. Victor E. Prato of the 127th Airborne Engineer Battalion, according to Fox 5. The soldier is originally from Somers, New York.
He was injured on November 13th while being deployed in Afghanistan. Fox reported that he “suffered multiple soft tissue injuries following a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device blast.”
President Trump first shook the young man’s hand before placing the Purple Heart on his shirt. Prato, who is currently in a neck brace, smiled before Trump tapped his hand one last time at the end of the ceremony.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders commented on the special moment, calling it “one of the most powerful moments of her life.”
She also stated she was “amazed by the strength and resilience of the men and women in our Armed Forces.”
